How AI Can Boost Your Reading and Writing (10 Ways)

How AI Can Boost Your Reading and Writing

Everyone has their own opinions on AI and how it can be used. Readers and writers are not left behind; they have their views on this emerging technology.

So what does AI have to offer to readers and writers? As a reader or writer, you should ask, “How can AI boost my reading and writing?” That’s what we’re going to discuss in this article.

We’ll explore AI tools, how they can assist you as a reader, various use cases for writers, and much more.

Let’s go.

What Are AI Tools?

AI tools

AI tools are online platforms that developers have trained to facilitate tasks, generate text, images, or videos, and help make our lives easier and more productive.

How reliable are AI tools? AI tools are rather reliable, but don’t entirely depend on them. Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t always trust those tools:

  • They are trained on a certain amount of data, therefore they have limited information.
  • They don’t possess human expertise and experience.
  • They can sometimes be wrong.

How Can AI Improve Reading?

As a reader, I use AI in various ways to help me speed up my reading. AI can help you do that too. Let’s find out how.

1. Providing Book Suggestions

In the past, I usually used Google to look for the next book to read or the best books on a certain topic. Today, I hardly google anything related to books. What happened? I use AI tools, namely ChatGPT and Gemini AI, to get book suggestions in a short period.

Why is using AI tools for book suggestions better? You can describe specifically the type of books you want, stating the number of pages, the nationalities of the authors, the language version used, and much more.

Let’s say you want to read psychology books; if you were to search, you’d use a broad query like “best psychology books.” How could it be done with AI tools? You can be very specific, like “best psychology books for men under 20 written by American authors.”

2. Organizing a Reading Schedule

As a reader, planning when and how you will read your books is important. Without a proper plan, you might end up reading no books or reading books that are not important in achieving your reading goals.

You don’t know how to organize a reading schedule? AI is here to help you out.

All you need to do is open an AI app and ask the tool, “I have so and so books to read this month; can you help me organize how I should be reading those books?” Within a few seconds, that tool will tell you how to do it.

3. Explaining the Meanings of Words

Do you still search new words’ meanings on Google or look up their meanings in a dictionary? You can do that with AI in a more efficient way.

AI can help you understand the meaning of words, whether the words are formal or informal, synonyms and antonyms of the words, and so much more.

4. Summarizing Books

Gone are the days when we had to search the Internet for book summaries. Today, we can use AI to get the best summaries possible.

Using AI to summarize books is better as you will get the exact information you want from the tool: the summary. Compared to blog summaries, you might have to scroll through walls of text to find what you’re looking for.

5. Explaining Meanings and Sentiments of Complex Statements

Imagine it’s 2015. You encounter a complex statement in a book and can’t understand its meaning. You have two options:

  • Look up the meaning of the statement on the Internet (even though it’s difficult to find the exact statement explained) or
  • Post a question on an online platform asking others what it means

You no longer have to do that now; AI tools got you covered. They can help you

  • Understand the meaning of very complex statements, no matter the level of your English proficiency
  • Decipher the tone of a statement
  • Understand the literary device used in a statement

That’s it. If you’re also a writer, let’s explore how AI tools can work for you.

How Can I Use AI to Improve My Writing?

Maybe you are wondering, “How is AI helping writers?” I’m also a writer, and I use AI in several ways. They make my writing journey more efficient. What’s more, they also make my writing more polished and professional.

AI can also do so for you as a writer. Let’s go through the list together.

1. Brainstorming for Writing Ideas

You might find it difficult to come up with good writing ideas sometimes. It’s not strange; we have all experienced that.

What do you do when such things happen? Don’t overthink — AI tools are here to help you out.

ChatGPT and its friends can help you find exciting writing ideas that you’ve never thought of. All you need to do is send a message to the AI chatbot and get new ideas.

2. Generating Content

AI tools can help you generate epic content that is optimized for a certain audience. Let’s face it: Can AI writing tools generate all types of content? No, they are better used for writing content that doesn’t require expertise and experience.

So if you have so many things to do, you can let AI write some content for you while you focus on more important things. However, remember that AI-generated content should always be edited and humanized. Whether AI writing tools are good or bad is a story for another day.

But… Are AI tools limited to just generating content? No, this is what introduces us to the next use case.

3. Polishing Written Content

AI tools can also make your content better by

  • Fixing grammatical inconsistencies
  • Correcting misspelled words
  • Improving flow and readability
  • Optimizing your content so it’s perfect for your target audience
  • Ensuring consistency throughout the content

That’s fantastic, right? It is! Using AI tools in your writing will help you save a lot of money that you might spend hiring freelancers to do things for you.

What makes polishing a piece epic? Paying attention to details. AI tools pay more attention to details than some humans, so they not only help you save money, they also provide way better services.

4. Repurposing Content

A good piece should always be repurposed and posted on different platforms. For example, suppose you have written a blog post. AI tools can help you repurpose it into a social media post. They can also provide epic tips on how you can convert that post into a video.

Doing that will help you reach more people and establish authority in your niche or industry. The best part? Everything will be done within a few seconds, helping you manage your time more effectively.

Let’s look at the last item on the list: something all writers hate–writer’s block.

5. Dealing With the Writer’s Block

If you’re new to the term “writer’s block,” it’s simply a situation in which you find it difficult to continue writing even if you want to.  Almost every writer has experienced it at least once.

So how can AI help you deal with such a situation? What I usually do is ask an AI chatbot, “Give me suggestions on how I can finish this,” and I will be given many ways to finish the write-up. Try doing the same; you’ll be amazed by the suggestions it’ll provide.
